whitefox: helping brands, thought leaders and writers create beautiful bespoke books
Your dog’s weight may not be something you often think about, but with recent studies suggesting that dog obesity is higher than ever, with 51 per cent of dogs in the UK registering as overweight or obese, it’s never been more important to think about what you are feeding your dog, and how it could impact their life.
Sean McCormack has dedicated his career to educating pet owners and the veterinary community about the importance of animal health and nutrition. After transferring from clinical practice to the position of Head Vet at award-winning tech-driven pet nutrition business tails.com, he came up with the perfect way to spread awareness to dog owners everywhere: a book.
‘I’d been thinking about writing a book on dog health and nutrition for ages, but then the idea of a recipe book started to emerge, which was more fun and could still cover important issues.’ And after nutritional expert and bestselling author Annabel Karmel reached out over Instagram with hopes of collaborating, Sean’s mission to provide ‘healthy, delicious and nutritious recipes the whole family would enjoy preparing’ seemed more possible than ever.
It can be difficult to know what your dog needs, and even harder to notice underlying health conditions. By creating a book, Sean and tails.com hoped to make knowledge and advice on pet nutrition and health issues as accessible as possible. ‘Veterinary professionals can sometimes come across as judgemental or unsupportive when doing their best to give advice on pet weight control’, and it can be very hard to say no to man’s best friend when they’re asking for a treat. But who said goodies can’t be healthy? With fifty-six dogs in the tails.com office, Sean knows treats are a must. ‘Providing treats is and should be a part of caring for our pets. But it should be done in a healthy way, treating every dog as an individual.’
All proceeds from The Happy Dog Cookbook are being donated to StreetVet UK, a fantastic nonprofit animal welfare charity whose mission is to ‘provide free, accessible veterinary care for the pets of people experiencing homelessness’; those who may find it difficult to access private veterinary care. StreetVet UK’s goals ‘couldn’t be more aligned’ with that of tails.com and choosing to donate the proceeds of the book to their cause was a ‘total no-brainer’ for Sean and the team behind The Happy Dog Cookbook.
