Tech Nation and whitefox: working together to self-publish insights from twenty-five of the UK’s top tech experts

The problem

How do you scale your tech team? How can you fire a board member? How can you maintain your company culture as you scale? These were just some of the important questions the team at Tech Nation were keen to provide the answers to in their book for tech entrepreneurs.

Tech Nation is a national network for ambitious tech entrepreneurs, helping the UK’s most promising tech companies to accelerate their growth and unlock the key to scaling successfully through innovative programmes such as Upscale.

When launching their Upscale programme, Tech Nation were keen to create something concrete and cohesive to demonstrate the important work they were doing and increase brand awareness. As tech specialists, they decided to defy the digital and go traditional … with a physical book. They wanted the book to contain insights from a broad collection of experienced people, each opinion contributing to a cohesive, insightful and essential handbook for those looking to scale and grow their startup.

The solution

With the support of whitefox, the Tech Nation team commissioned and compiled the thoughts of twenty-five of the UK’s top tech entrepreneurs, investors and industry veterans. It was a challenge to take twenty-five different voices and compile them creatively and entertainingly, but whitefox knew just the person to help. Journalist and writer James Silver met and spoke to each contributor and edited their expert insight into Upscale: What it takes to scale a startup. By the people who’ve done it. The whitefox team project-managed the entire process, and while the editorial process came together, got to work sourcing an expert designer, managing sales and organising distribution.

The result

Tech Nation were hugely happy with the result of their self-publishing project: twenty-five expert insights in one creatively curated, striking yellow book. The entrepreneurial team were able to accomplish their goals of raising brand awareness and marketing their programmes, not to mention the number of sales the book has made! And, as a result of the popularity of Upscale, Tech Nation recently decided to create an audio edition of the book with whitefox, who were more than happy to help.

Here’s what the Tech Nation team had to say about their experience.

‘whitefox worked closely with us to publish and launch our first Tech Nation book, Upscale. We’ve had fantastic demand for the book, and have been delighted with the whole process, so much so that we recently engaged them again to produce and launch our audiobook version of the same book. Launching our book has served many more purposes than we imagined, and we regularly pass the books on to companies we work and engage with. Having a book opens up a whole new marketing channel, raises brand awareness, engages with your target audience and in general is a great addition to your marketing toolkit. I would not hesitate to recommend whitefox for a publishing project, and thoroughly recommend you take the plunge and get publishing.’
