A digital-first edition with Emma Gannon, award-winning novelist and Substacker

Overview

  • A beautifully designed new paperback edition
  • Harnessing the power of a highly engaged Substack community
  • A creative collaboration with a bestselling author

The Brief

Sunday Times bestselling author Emma Gannon approached Whitefox to find a new home for her existing memoir, A Year of Nothing, her refreshingly honest story of burnout. A Year of Nothing was first published in 2023 in partnership with The Pound Project as a limited-edition release. With plenty of life left in it, the book remains hugely relevant to today’s audiences and Emma wanted to re-release it on her own terms.

She chose Whitefox for the creative control and independence we offer, our decades of publishing expertise and our network of freelance talent. With an impressive 80K subscribers to her Substack, The Hyphen, Emma was well placed to leverage her own platform to promote the book while benefitting from the option to add in tailored support to plug any gaps.

The Execution

A Year of Nothing follows Emma’s quiet rebellion against the cult of doing. Over four seasons, she steps away from the noise to rediscover joy in life’s simplest pleasures, from dog borrowing and dopamine dressing to relearning how to swim and embracing a child-free life.

We worked closely with Emma to translate the two printed volumes of A Year of Nothing into one beautifully designed new paperback. With a new foreword by Julia Cameron, author of The Artist’s Way, it is designed to appeal to Emma’s large existing readership as well as being more widely available via trade sales channels to extend its lifetime and audience.

The beautiful book cover was designed by art director and illustrator, Anna Morrison, a talented designer from our curated network. Emma was closely involved in the design process with a clear vision for something illustrative and unique. Anna created a striking, evocative cover design that perfectly answered the brief while also aligning with both Emma’s brand and the colourful, playful style of her other books.

As A Year of Nothing had been published previously, a structural edit wasn’t required and we brought on board two of our most trusted freelancers for copyediting and proofreading. The finished book is available as a print-on-demand (POD) paperback and eBook via Amazon KDP and IngramSpark, allowing readers, retailers and distributors globally to order it.

We held a pre-launch event for Emma’s book at the Century Club in London where she was interviewed by Molly Flatt from the Bookseller about new models of publishing. You can watch the event on our YouTube channel.

The Results

Emma Gannon has described working with Whitefox as a ‘truly joyful and collaborative experience’ and the book’s success is testament to our publishing partnership. A Year of Nothing has garnered a flurry of media interest already with a print feature in Harper’s Bazaar, inclusion in The Observer Book Club, podcast interviews coming up and a mini book tour underway with events in Barcelona and London.

Our bespoke publishing method is perfectly suited to a savvy, entrepreneurial author like Emma who likes to experiment with different formats and routes to market. With her most recent novel, A Table for One, published by HarperCollins last year, she is comfortably pursuing both traditional and independent publishing routes to market, moving between the two on a project-by-project basis.
