The Brief
With decades of experience at the top of British fashion, Ryan Llewellyn-Pace approached us to publish his business self-help book, Be the Wolf Not the Sheep. As the former Managing Director of Barbour, the Founder & Chairman of Hay Life Clothing Ltd and the CEO of the Pace Group, Ryan wanted to capture his business philosophy in a book which translated years of hands-on crisis management, brand turnarounds and startup scaling into a methodology for aspiring entrepreneurs.
The book would be used as an asset to grow his keynote speaking platform and to position Ryan as a trusted mentor to the next generation of fashion and retail entrepreneurs as part of his mission to give back to emerging founders.
With content that appealed to a global audience, ensuring the book was widely available and distinctive were top priorities as well making it accessible to readers in whichever medium they prefer to consume books.
The Execution
Aimed at entrepreneurs, creatives, and professionals across industries, the book blends fascinating personal insights with practical advice, built around a memorable premise.
Simultaneously published in print, ebook and audiobook, the cover design needed to reflect both its position in the market and the inspiring content. It was important to Ryan to develop a cover design that moved away from generic corporate imagery to convey the wolf pack aesthetic. We opted for a striking minimalist palette backdropped by rich black tones with gold foil finishing to give the book a premium feel. With an uncluttered interior layout, we worked with a typesetter to prioritise clean white space and breathing room on the page for a contemporary ‘manifesto’ style reading experience that let his core principles come to the fore.
We worked collaboratively with Ryan on a full suite of editorial and design services pairing him with a dedicated structural editor to refine his arguments, and reworking references and endmatter to produce a manuscript that maintained integrity in the sources while ensuring a smooth uncluttered reading experience. A helpful collection of key reference texts were included at the back to facilitate further exploration of the book’s concepts and themes.
The print and ebook were made available through online and physical retailers via KDP and IngramSpark and we ensured that the audiobook was widely visible across all major audio retail platforms. Ryan opted for a marketing package to support discoverability around publication.
The Results
“Whitefox has been outstanding to work with. As a new author who needed a lot of guidance, they could not have been more diligent and supportive in helping me get the most out of the book. Some parts of the process were truly inspiring, particularly working with the structural editor and the support provided throughout the audiobook process. For my next book, I already know where I’ll be going – I wouldn’t deviate from Whitefox.” Ryan Llewellyn-Pace
The publication of Be the Wolf not the Sheep created opportunities for targeted media coverage in industry publications including Drapers, Retail Week and Retail Bulletin giving Ryan a platform to share his mission of supporting emerging fashion businesses in a challenging climate.
Ryan held a launch for the book at the offices of Hay Life Clothing and used the book’s publication to launch a new podcast and media brand called ‘The Fashion Think Tank’ on TikTok, Instagram, YouTube and Spotify. The series, which focuses on the fashion industry from an insider’s perspective, had over 1 million views in the first 2 weeks.
