Going Indie: Publishing Your Book Your Way

Big News! We’ve written a book (and become our own client in the process).
Going Indie: Publishing Your Book Your Way will be out on the 28th May and we’re feeling all the pre-publication nerves and excitement usually experienced by our authors.
After so many years helping writers, thought leaders and brands create brilliant books, what made us decide to write our own? Well, we know from our own steady growth that indie publishing is becoming increasingly relevant and attractive. Authors have more options than ever before but faced with so much choice, how do writers know which path is best? Our co-founder John Bond, and journalist James Silver, have written Going Indie to cut through the hype, give a broad perspective on the state of play in publishing today and help writers get what they most want from their book.
Little more than a decade ago, the journey to publishing success was largely confined to a single route: securing a deal with a mainstream publishing house through a literary agent. The launch of Kindle Direct Publishing by Amazon in 2007 revolutionised the industry, enabling millions of authors to bypass traditional gatekeepers and forge their own paths.
Today, indie authors not only dominate bestseller lists but can earn more than their traditionally published counterparts, enjoying the freedom to publish what they want, when they want. They leverage social media to market their work, use print-on-demand services and own their rights. To quote Richard Osman, currently the UK’s bestselling novelist, talking on a recent podcast, ‘Almost every single one of the biggest selling authors of the last five years have been people who were self-published and people who wrote and wrote and wrote the thing that they loved and then went absolutely massive’.
And yet going indie isn’t for everyone. If you’re chasing literary prizes or a household-name publisher and you need an advance to live on, the traditional route is likely still your best bet. John and James have evaluated both routes honestly and fairly so writers can make the right choice for them.
Going Indie is packed full of fresh insights from top agents, publishers and authors including Emma Gannon (Sunday Times bestselling author), Joel Rickett (MD at Ebury and Quadrille), Jonny Geller (CEO at Curtis Brown talent agency), Orna Ross (co-founder and director of the Alliance of Independent Authors) and Joanna Penn (bestselling independent author and podcaster).
We’re documenting the process of bringing the book to life over on our Substack, The Writing Type and our latest post goes behind the scenes of the cover design.
